Dumbstruck!

Something very cool happened to me. This past weekend (Nov. 8-11) was The World Fantasy Convention. I attended it as an exhibitor.

The first fantastic thing to happen was that I met Moebius, that is the pseudonym for Jean Giraud the great French artist, concept designer and comic genius. We talked briefly but I didn't want to monopolize his time because everyone wanted to meet and talk to him. This was, after all, during the artists' reception at the art exhibit.

The next thing to happen was unbelievable and highly improbable. Mr. Giraud bought a painting of mine. He told me himself and I was dumbstruck. Truly speechless.

The painting above is now in Jean Giraud's house in Paris. I've posted it before but I thought I'd put up a newer larger scan of it.

I did the drawing above last Friday for fun and it came out looking a little like a female Arzach, one of Moebius' male characters, so I took it more in that direction. Clearly I was still thinking about that meeting. She's not wearing Arzach's archetypal hat. It's been replaced by hair of similar proportions, kind of Marge Simpson-esque. The last thing I added to this was Arzach's own winged transport to make the homage clear.

I wonder how much of a sycophant I'd be if I packed that picture up and sent it off to the artist that subconsciously then consciously inspired it?

Oh, and here is proof that I met him, a picture of me, Omar Rayyan, an artist friend you should see the work of, and Jean Giraud (Moebius) himself (below).

Picture by Sheila Rayyan (Also a spectacular artist. You can see her work on the Rayyan link as well).

Moebius bought a painting of yours! That is very cool...and he has good taste. Now he's got a great painting. You must be still high off that event.
congrats!

Funny coincidence indeed, your Giraud moment / my Giraud post, and I'm also awakening from an internet/blog free summer :) Looks like all is good for you!

sad to see the book rejected, i get a lot of "This is good we like this but it's not the sort of thing we do"

well done on selling the painting though

Woowee congratulations : )
All those extra hours getting the figure just right now have a most distinguished host. how cool is that! Of course it could also have been the classy arrangement of the centrifugous zeppelins!
I love the character below, by the way ( the pencil drawing ) .

I was trying to express how I feel about what you say. Trying to explain how much we need understanding about our works, and how nice was moebius buying your work. Because over all, you deserved that sell, your picture was more than awesome, but I'm not good enough with the english language, so I just hope not to wrote a mess here. hehe

What a wonderful affirmation for you. He's a big hero of mine, I'm lucky enough to have several French albums with nice sketches in them my father got when Giraud visited a comic shop in Long Beach back in the day. I'm sure it helped my father spoke French...

I met "Moebius" back in the eighties just before he was re-coloring his stuff for Marvel. He was very kind and asked me to come to his table at the end of the convention to talk about coloring for him. When I came to his table at the end of the show his agent Jean Marc was there and tried to chase me away, claiming Giraud didn't know how to say "no" to artists, but HE did. I explained it was Giraud's idea, he had wondered over to my table and liked the coloring I had done for Berni Wrightson on the Cult. JM and I almost came to blows over it, I always wondered if Giraud changed his mind or not.

Scott, I imagined the statue in that painting to be a gift from one city/state to another. A common thing in Gnemo's world. (Hey, I've got a bunch of Gnemo stuff to post). It's as if when France gave us the Statue of Liberty it became a continuing tradition.

Thanks Laurent, I guess we were hibernating through the summer. I do love your blog, always great art there.

Konstantin, I got delayed but that drawing is packed up to go out tomorrow. I love doing character sketches. My drawings of people typically have notes all around them with quotes I imagine from the characters themselves and little thumbnail gesture sketches.

Guillermo, thank you. To speak or write more than one language is beyond me so I'm impressed by anyone bilingual. You do some awesome stuff too.

Bill, you're doing some stellar paintings. I love going to your blog. From my impression of Mr. Giraud, he is a genuine person. I'm sure that it was entirely a case of his agent being an idiot. My experience is that agents often give bad impressions of artists. By the way, "The Cult" Batman you worked on is great.

Mark, I did send the drawing to him. He said he liked my "turkey" -- Arzach's bird. By the way, it's pretty interesting to see turkeys fly and hard to believe that such a fat creature can get off the ground.
